Magdaline lives with her mother, a brother, and a sister in the Soweto slums in Nairobi, Kenya. Her father separated from her mother 5 years ago. The main problem was that her father came home drunk and beat her mother and even chased the whole family out of the house. This experience was very frightening and discouraging for Magdaline. Her mother does odd jobs such as jobs in laundry and growing food for other people, which is too little to provide a living for the family. Growing up together with her father has left her with a big scar and lowered her self-esteem because of the violence she experienced every day. Due to these facts, she could not continue her school activities as a normal student. She went to school for eight years but had to be sent back home many times because she was too tired or hungry.
Magdaline’s dream is to become a wonderful doctor. She wants to make it her passion to save people and help them live better lives. Despite all the difficulties they have, she loves her family incredibly much. The bond between her siblings and her mother is very strong and this gives her hope for a bright future. Her favorite color is pink because it shines so beautifully and brings light into every gray day. Magdaline would love to go back to school. She sees school as a wonderful platform where she can learn new things and develop her expertise and way of thinking.
